Hi, my name is Maree. I have been a Home-based Educator since 1998 when my children were preschoolers. My career has allowed me to be at home with my children and I am forever grateful for that. I have loved caring for children who have come in to my care over the years and I am proud to be able to continually experience the world and all of its exciting discoveries through the eyes of preschoolers.
I believe that preschool children do their learning through play, and so I allow the children to direct their own activities to a large degree. I find that if they choose what they would like to do, then they are always fully involved. I extend their learning through their interests and offering activities and experiences that build on their interests. For example, if they choose to draw I will talk to them about the colours they are using. Activities such as baking are a perfect opportunity to discuss mathematical and scientific concepts such as measurement, weight, reactions of ingredients, volume and shape. Communication I believe is important in a caring, nurturing relationship and I encourage an open and honest relationship with children and their families. I am very ‘real’ in my relationship with families and whanau and I believe parents appreciate this.
I have a four bedroom home which is situated next to a park in a very quiet cul-de-sac. I have lots of outdoor and indoor toys and resources which extend children’s learning opportunities. I attend local music groups and community activities.
